September 2018 Brief News & Notes

Alumni & Friends Reception in San Francisco

Were you among our 300+ guests on August 10th in San Francisco?  If you missed it, you can still enjoy this photo recap of the festivities we held in partnership with Alliant International University during the annual APA conference.  Preceded by a highly informative alumni panel, the alumni and friends reception included university leadership, faculty, past/present/prospective students, and foundation leadership.  Check out the photos here!

As an added bonus, foundation board member, volunteer, and donor Connell Persico hosted a special lunch discussion with past scholarship recipients.  It was the first such gathering of the group as a cohort and they were able to share some terrific insights about how to expand and improve the scholarship for future recipients.

Callan-Smith-Meltzoff Fellowship & CSPP-SD Founders and Pioneers Installation

On August 20th at the San Diego campus, 40 friends and donors stopped by to recognize the significant contributions of CSPP-San Diego’s founders and pioneers as part of a new installation in Daley Hall.  Immediately following, the group convened in Green Hall to celebrate the announcement of the first-ever Callan-Smith-Meltzoff Fellows, Holly Bookwalter and Vanessa Wu, as presented by Joanne Callan.  Check out photos from the special event here.

Foundation funds over $250K for Alliant Students

For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2018, the Alliant Ed Foundation invested just over $250K for student scholarships across all six California campuses.  The majority of these funds were made available through donor-funded endowments and were awarded on the basis of competitive scholarship applications and/or merit.  Added to the $1.5M the foundation funds directly through Alliant International University, and we are supporting nearly 800 students across all schools and campuses this year.

Mental Health Consortium Update

Staff and board members of the foundation are making progress towards developing a new mental health consortium offering more placement opportunities for Alliant students in providing high-quality mental health support to underserved populations.  Envisioned as an enhanced partnership between Alliant and non-profit partners, the foundation hopes to build and support new collaborations that benefit both the underserved clients of partner agencies and the professional development of Alliant students.

As a lead gift and significant boost to our efforts, a generous donor recently contributed $50K towards a $100K commitment to help launch the new initiative.  We are extremely grateful for this support!

Herbert Baker Organizational Psychology Scholarship

As a tribute to Dr. Herb Baker after his passing in 2010, the Herbert Baker Organizational Psychology Scholarship was founded.  This important scholarship is awarded every fall to an Organizational Psychology student based on merit and commitment to the ideals exemplified by Dr. Baker.  In order to memorialize Herb’s scholarship for future generations of students, Herb’s daughter Caressa Jackson has decided to establish a permanent endowment fund.  But we need your assistance.

Caressa has launched a Go Fund Me campaign with the foundation to offer a dollar-for-dollar match up to $10,000 to establish the permanent endowment at a total of $20,000.  To learn more and consider making a tax-deductible gift, please visit Caressa’s page here.

Quick Reminder: Faculty Grants & Contracts

Just a quick reminder that the foundation’s role in supporting faculty grants & contracts is “open for business!”  As a current faculty member, if you are considering a research grant, training grant, or related endeavor that requires a non-profit sponsor, let us know as we may be able to help.  Just send a quick note to Ava Chan-Crowder at Ava@AlliantEd.org for more information.
